In summer 1982 the witness was hiking with five relatives down a forest trail near Mt. Rainier after finding a wood carving vandalized. The group heard heavy pacing footsteps in the woods that stopped when they stopped walking and resumed when they walked. They then heard a loud howl described as having two simultaneous tones, after which the whole group ran to their vehicle and drove away.

They then saw a hair-covered face peering at them through bushes a short distance away, which appeared two more times as they continued. In 1977 the witness, an Army instructor at Fort Lewis, was alone grading trainees on a night exercise when he smelled a foul rotten-egg odor and heard brush rustling and branches breaking. He saw a pair of eyes staring at him as a creature moved left to right in front of him, then left the area, after which the odor and sounds stopped. He was frightened and hid, and a next-day search found no tracks.

A cabin-mate reportedly looked out and described multiple large, hairy, human-like figures near the water tower and cabins.
