Bowhunter witnesses woodknocking behavior outside the town of Burns
The witness was bow-hunting elk and reported hearing knocks timed to his steps near a clearing in the afternoon. He then watched through binoculars as a large hair-covered figure struck a log against a dead tree. As he left, knocks continued and he heard a log thrown nearby, later noticing a rancid black puddle on the trail.
Threatening bellows directed at hikers and their dogs in the Holy Cross Wilderness
The witness and a companion were hiking a high-elevation trail with two dogs when they heard a very loud, rhythmic wailing and moaning sound from a pine cluster about 50-75 yards away. The sound lasted several minutes and seemed to move toward them, growing louder, which frightened the witness and held the dogs' fixed attention without prompting a chase. They left without seeing the source, and minutes later a ranger they met said she had also heard the unfamiliar sound.
Family describes possible encounter at campsite in Grizzly Creek Canyon
The witness was camping with family in a canyon. At night around the campfire they smelled a strong foul odor, the dogs barked toward the darkness, and loud guttural vocalizations came from just outside the firelight two or three times. After a few minutes the smell faded and the dogs calmed. The next morning they found smashed grass behind a boulder near the tent.
