Man hears unusual sounds and strong odor while hiking with family
A family of four hiked the Big Creek trail loop near Lake Cushman in late morning. All four heard a prolonged mournful sound described as part howl and part groan. About half an hour later near a creek bridge they encountered an intense skunk- and ammonia-like odor that caused watering eyes and distress before dissipating as they continued.

The guides suggested a cougar, kept a large fire going all night, and the group felt uneasy and watched the next morning before continuing downriver.
