During a family reunion campout, four relatives walked to nearby creek pools at night to look for frogs. They smelled a strong fecal odor and heard rustling and two heavy thuds approaching from dense woods, then fled back to camp. After calming down, some returned armed but found no source, noticed the odor was gone and the dogs had not reacted, and one noted a den-like resting spot across the marshy creek.

Shortly after the silence, the witness heard a loud deep grumbly yell ending deeper that she had never heard before. Four people settling to sleep at a deer hunting camp heard a deep grunting animal shuffling behind a tent. Two of them got up with rifles and lights to investigate, and the animal left quickly while grunting and breaking through brush. They never saw the animal and found no tracks the next morning.

The footsteps approached to within a few feet, stopped for several minutes, then resumed and moved away. As they left the area they noticed a strong ammonia-like odor.

During a 1983 backpacking trip in wooded hills in Arkansas, the witness and friends found three oval rock-and-leaf structures described as nests, with bark-stripped branches beside two of them, plus a very large scat pile and a pine tree with bark stripped in long strips. They remained in the area two more days hearing unidentified spooky noises but reported seeing no animal.

The witness and his father were scouting a river-bottom area for deer stand sites at dusk when they heard a loud, long, high-pitched scream three times from the edge of the woods about 150 yards away. They could not see the source as darkness fell. Perceiving the vocalizations as directed at them to leave, they ended scouting and returned to camp.
