Vocalizations and wood knocks heard by fishermen near pond

The witness and a companion were fishing at the farthest of several ponds in the late afternoon. They heard repeated whoop-like vocalizations followed by loud wood-on-wood knocking from a wooded area behind a hill that blocked their view. The sounds lasted about ten minutes, after which fish began biting. The witness later said the sounds matched examples of alleged vocalizations and knocks heard online.

In late May 2005 the witness and a companion waited in dense woods by a river after dark. After the witness imitated howls, something within about 200 yards answered with repeated loud deep growls, followed by about a minute of chattering from two directions. Later the witness struck a tree with a stick and heard similar loud banging from across the river for one to two minutes. The pair heard nothing else except insects and coyotes, and never saw the sources.

While turkey hunting in the morning with a relative, the witness used a turkey box call. A nearby loud howl that turned into a roaring scream answered the call, followed by two more distant replies farther up the canyon as the call was repeated. The pair moved toward the first sound but saw nothing in the scattered pines.

The witness had gone to bed in his hunting cabin late Friday night when the forest went quiet and then heard a very loud scream from the southwest answered from the southeast. The exchange repeated four times with answering wood-on-tree bangs between the second and third calls, with the nearer sounds appearing to move farther southeast before all sounds stopped and normal night sounds resumed minutes later.

Participant observations during BFRO WV Expedition

On the second night of the expedition, the witness and two companions walked back along a riverside trail talking with lights off. They repeatedly heard loud splashes from across the river that appeared to keep pace with them as they moved. They stopped after each splash to listen but heard no footsteps over the river noise, then returned to camp.

The witness was family camping in the Big Cypress area when she noticed a tall black shape in the woods that vanished minutes later. Around 4 a.m. she awoke to a distant wailing sound with heavy breathing that approached the campsite, passed by the tents and left down a trail, waking several companions who also heard it. In the morning the group followed the direction of travel and found large wide footprints with a four-toe appearance in a sandy trail that had not been there the day before.

The witness was walking home at night near a creek when something began throwing sticks and rocks and following her. The throwing reportedly paused when cars passed. She ran to a bridge where the pursuer entered bushes but continued throwing objects, while she heard footsteps, smelled a strong bad odor, and glimpsed only a large dark figure. Footprints were reportedly found in sand the next day.

They hiked toward the sound and found a footprint while the vocalization continued and seemed to approach closely behind them without crashing brush. When they returned months later, the sound was gone.

The witness was on a ladder cleaning the gutter of his two-story house in the morning when he heard a series of low-pitched, long howls. Dogs began barking once the howling started. After fishing until daylight they walked the creek and found two large barefoot-like prints in a sandbar near disturbed mussels, leading up an embankment into dense thorns.

They then heard deep gorilla-like grunts before the sounds moved away toward a creek, and they remained in the tent frightened until daylight without seeing anything.

They reported no sighting, odor, or footprints, and nearby hikers with dogs showed no unusual reaction.

The witness camped in a forested swamp area after dusk and reported hearing large animals moving around the camp in a triangular pattern, breaking branches and knocking on trees, including between the camp and a nearby vehicle. The witness suggested the sounds implied dexterous animals and doubted humans could move that quickly in the dark swamp.

He left the stand before dark and later reported finding no tracks on the soft sandy road.

The prints were described as about 17 inches long and 6 inches wide with a long stride, with over a hundred found. Woman-like screams were reported from the swamp area while dogs were barking around 2 a.m.
