After dark he struck a tree with a limb, then heard a large tree pushed over upslope, primate-like yells and chatter from both upslope and the ravine below, and heavy footsteps. Unnerved by the sense of being surrounded, he packed up and drove out without seeing anything.

Late at night the witness went onto an elevated deck after hearing brush noise and animal sounds. Something heavy walked up a ground-level dock and stopped directly beneath the deck. The witness saw only a large dark shape through the boards while it made loud sniffing breaths, then fled back inside.

The witness described a nearer caller and a more distant caller answering each other for about an hour. Two companions arrived early for deer hunting and sat waiting in a parked truck with the windows down before dawn. They heard repeated sets of seven very loud heavy knocks, with knocks near the truck answered from several hundred yards away after a few seconds, continuing for about eight minutes. A passing truck stopped, shone a spotlight toward the sound area, then left quickly, after which the knocking stopped.

The sounds were described as louder and more structured than dogs, coyotes, or other familiar animals, and local dogs began barking during the episode. The next day the witness found trampled vegetation, a coyote carcass, tarp pieces, a dog dish, and scat near the estimated sound source.
