Years later while working in law enforcement, the witness drove to a remote trailhead to pick up a fire-watcher ranger during a dry fall with active forest fires. Concerned when the ranger did not appear after dark, he walked up the trail with a flashlight and rifle and found the ranger hiding by a rock. Together they watched a tall, long-armed figure with large reflective eyes at the far edge of a clearing for an extended period before it crouched, raked grass, backed into the woods, and circled away crashing through brush. The ranger later said he had already encountered the same figure on the trail, where it screamed at him, caused him to drop his kit, and threw his bag, which was never recovered.

Two siblings were playing in a wooded valley by a stream on a family farm in late afternoon when they felt uneasy and heard a loud stick break. As they tried to leave over a fence, the reporter came face-to-face with a huge black hairy figure crouched behind a tree and screamed. In late spring 1970, two people sightseeing by car on Highway 441 near the Tennessee-North Carolina state line claimed a tall, slender hair-covered biped crossed the road in front of them. The creature walked upright on two legs from the right side to the left without looking at them, then continued into roadside bushes where only its head remained briefly visible. The witnesses estimated its height at about seven feet and noted clean straight walnut-brown hair, long arms, and lack of a visible neck.

He turned to see an upright animal at close range that quickly climbed the steep bank to the ridgeline. The group then heard extremely loud guttural vocalizations and huffs, saw movement on the ridge, and had a large rock land in the water near them. They left at dusk and later agreed among themselves it had not been a bear despite one relative's dismissive explanation.

Two people were fishing at a river at night when wildlife sounds suddenly stopped. One of them went to the top of the bank with a rifle and spotlight and observed red eyes estimated to be 7 to 8 feet high near the fence. Shots were fired toward the eyes, impacts were heard, and the eyes closed with nothing further seen. The pair left quickly, had to move crowded livestock to exit, and never returned.
