The witness drove into the mountains near Shaver with his dog for a day hike to clear his head. About fifteen feet away a reddish female creature stood up from behind a manzanita bush while a large black male charged down from about two hundred yards away. The witness covered his dog in a fetal position until the male stopped close by, then tossed an apple which the female grabbed and ate whole before both walked toward the ridge. Afterwards he found a reddish puddle of blood behind the bush and left quickly.

A prior guest driving in Pennsylvania saw a four-legged animal he thought was a coyote or wolf jump into the middle of the road. The animal then rose onto two legs and ran toward his car.
