The witness stated familiarity with bears and claimed this was not a bear. When they returned shortly after, they saw remains of a small animal in the road that it may have been eating.

In summer 1987, the witness and two companions were resting on a rock after swimming and fishing at a swimming hole on the Gauley River when the area went quiet. They saw a large, dark-brown, two-legged animal standing in a clearing across the river watching them for about two minutes before it left up the bank and out of hearing up the hillside. The next day the witness revisited the spot and judged the animal had been at least seven feet tall.

Through the side window the witness saw a dark hair-covered biped running alongside the van at matching speed, which turned its head to look at the witness. The companion did not see it. The witness refused to leave the van at the hangar and the pair left, returning the next day.

Shortly afterward limbs in a nearby tree shook vigorously, but the animal was not seen again.

A much larger creature appeared in light through the trees, pointed between the baby and the child and motioned for the child to come closer. When the child's grandmother called for dinner, the large one blended into the background and additional figures moved away down the fence line.
