A deputy on night patrol parked down a dirt side road off a long straight forest road to watch for racers and dozed off. He awoke to see a large dark face staring through the passenger window, its breath fogging the glass, which rose and grimaced as he reacted. He turned on all emergency and spot lights, watched a tall stooped wide-shouldered figure walk behind the cruiser and out of the light, then drove out and returned to find it gone.

While the witness blew a loud predator call, his buddy watched the road and saw something big and black he first took for a young cow on all fours. It went into the tree line about a hundred feet away, circled, and gave a yell-growl the buddy had never heard from a bear. The witness was blowing the call and did not hear it himself.
