The witness went back to a truck to get an ax, but the creature had disappeared upon return.

Four college geology students camping at night heard howling from a canyon and then saw the outline of a huge bipedal animal on the road in moon and campfire light. When the animal approached, one student fired a rifle several times, after which it crossed the road and moved noisily up the opposite slope through brush. The witness's family of four stayed late at a remote Howard's Creek campsite and walked along the loop road on a bright Sunday afternoon. About 60 to 75 feet ahead, a very large dark-brown furry biped emerged from brush on one side, glanced toward them, then crossed quickly into brush on the other side. Frightened, the family returned to camp, where they noted deep scratches high on a tree trunk that they associated with the animal.
