Unusual thud and possible whoop heard along with feeling of being watched in Algonquin Provincial Park
The witness was lying awake in a tent at a Rain Lake campsite with a companion already asleep when a powerful but silent ground thud was felt very close to the tent, followed by a brief skunk-like odor. Later that night the witness heard an unusually loud whoop-like sound first taken for a loon. In the morning an indistinct disturbance entering camp and a freshly snapped tree stump were found, and while hiking out the witness felt watched.

The witness and two companions explored a deforested and mined area with piled boulders and abandoned mine buildings. Over about an hour they heard tapping from the woods, running footfalls, crashing in brush, and other strange noises, while stones were reportedly thrown toward the companions. The witness, his wife, and their infant son walked to a fishing pool along a brushy creek after noticing a strong odor. While the witness fished, his wife heard a rock land beside her on a gravel bar, followed by cracking noises like branches breaking underfoot in the forest behind them. The witness threw rocks toward the sounds thinking it was a bear, but the noises continued, so the family packed up and left without further incident.

Last summer while camping in the same area, the witness heard heavy bipedal footsteps pass by his tent at about 1am and noticed a slight skunk odour, but saw no one when he looked outside.

The witness describes a fall investigation in a remote forest north of the city. A prior night vigil yielded stomps, calls, knocks and sounds of something circling camp. Follow-up reconnaissance found sharpened sticks staked across a game trail, tracks along a nearby river, and a very tall teepee structure the next day.

The patrol stopped, smelled a musty swampy odor, and performed a break-contact drill firing blanks while running to extraction. The commander later dismissed it as probably a bear.
