Growl in Florida (2011)
The witness walked a narrow tractor trail at night to check a hog trap while a companion waited in the car. He heard footsteps, a deep rumbling growl, and smelled an intensely foul odor, then sensed something following and stopping behind him. The companion turned on headlights and saw a very tall, black-haired biped standing close behind him making threatening fist and foot displays. The creature crashed away through brush when lights flashed, and the witness abandoned his equipment and never returned.
Pre-dawn sighting by a deer hunter in his truck near Elkhorn
The witness had parked his truck on a ridge road before dawn to deer hunt. After hearing coyotes, he got back in the truck and then saw a tall hair-covered human-like figure emerge from the woods beside the truck. The figure paused facing the truck, then walked around it and left down the point out of sight. The witness stayed in the truck until daylight, then found skid marks where it descended but no footprints.
Father and son have possible encounter in a deer blind near Woodbine
The witness and his son were deer hunting from a blind in darkness before dawn. After the son woke the sleeping witness, they heard something large moving fast through brush behind the blind. It screamed, stomped hard enough to shake the ground, snapped limbs, and grunted and growled before leaving quickly. The pair then left the area immediately.
Possible daytime encounter by a family hiking near Lake Cushman
The witness hiked a loop trail near Lake Cushman with three family members in late morning. The group heard a mournful 8-10 second howl/groan and about 30 minutes later encountered a strong skunk- and ammonia-like odor near a creek bridge on both sides of the trail. They also noticed unusual uprooted mushrooms along the trail. No creature was seen.
Hunter has a daylight sighting of a tall biped west of Darrington
The witness and a companion were hunting at the end of a ridge-top logging road and split up to glass opposite slopes. The witness smelled a rotten odor and heard crashing below, then saw a dark head, shoulders and upper back moving downhill upright for a few seconds before losing sight of it while still hearing movement. Visibility worsened with rain and low clouds and both soon left, with the witness not telling the companion at the time.

The witness and three friends went ghost hunting at a remote cemetery in a forest late at night. After hearing grunting and footsteps paralleling them on a footpath, the friends fled while the witness turned to face a very tall dark figure swaying side to side that changed expression on eye contact and huffed, exposing a foul breath odor. When a friend shouted his name, the figure leapt away, and the witness ran to the car.

The witness was falling asleep at home at night when outdoor dogs began barking unusually loudly. The witness heard heavy, large-stepping footfalls below the bedroom window, went outside with a flashlight and saw nothing but smelled a strong skunk-like odor. The witness called 911 but no officer came, and a morning search found no tracks, fur, or odor.
Frightening encounter experienced on family property outside Naples
Three people spending the night in a trailer heard distant howling that grew closer and seemed to come from more than one direction, and they called back. Small stones were thrown toward them, and they heard stomping, grunting, knocking, movement in brush close by, and trees breaking. They retreated into a bedroom where screaming, walking, and contact with the outside of the trailer continued for about an hour while one of them looked through window blinds and was left frightened.
Possible encounter while volunteering at Macbride Raptor Project outside North Liberty
Two volunteers were feeding birds at a raptor center late at night when they heard something large moving in the woods beyond the cages. They followed sounds of heavy footsteps and snapping twigs along a walkway for about 30 minutes as it moved toward a reservoir inlet. Both reported seeing large red eyes during the pursuit but did not describe seeing a body.

The witness stayed overnight at a friend's rural trailer after reports of something frightening dogs and taking raw meat. After a heavy impact rocked the trailer and left dents, and a chained dog's chain snapped, the group smelled a musky odor and later saw a tall gray-brown figure in the driveway under lights. The figure raised its hand after the witness did, snorted, then ran into the woods.

While staying about a week to help move his elderly grandmother, the 11-year-old guest rode a mountain bike daily on wide trails toward the national forest and often felt watched. One day the woods went quiet and he heard childlike playing shift to indistinct murmuring, then heavy bipedal footsteps approaching through brush. A roughly nine-foot, black-haired, barrel-chested male stepped onto the trail about 30 yards away, made rapid mouth-popping clicks answered from the brush, then growled and changed expression when the witness turned his bike. A second taller individual stood up in the brush showing chest and head, the witness rode about two and a half miles home, and family members dismissed the report as a bear.

Two weeks after his friend's incident, the guest remained on his tree stand past dark and walked out alone after his flashlight failed. Something in brush to his left paced him and took an extra step each time he stopped. He drew his revolver and was followed for about half an hour, after which he never returned alone.

The witness was sitting alone in a deer stand in very dark, rainy conditions before dawn when a musky odor was present. He heard a whistle followed by repeated whooping from different directions, along with slow walking sounds and large branches breaking, which faded after several minutes. He stayed in the stand and noticed the odor was gone after sunrise.
Hiker startled by violent tree shaking and possible ground stomping near Uniacke House Museum
The witness was photographing nature along a loop trail behind a museum when repeated violent shaking of branches followed by loud ground thumps was heard from dense cover without any source being seen. After a third occurrence the witness left quickly and, after covering several hundred yards, heard a very loud thump about 80 feet behind. The witness then ran back to the museum, briefly losing the trail before finding the markers again.
Wilderness campers have an unknown visitor in the Trinity Alps of Northern California
The witness was lying awake in a tent at a remote lake camp around 1:30 a.m. while three companions slept. He heard footsteps circling camp, smelled a strong animal odor, and saw a large shadowy figure lift his backpack above the tent and appear to try to open it. After he yelled, the figure dropped the pack onto the tent and left camp on foot as the others woke and heard its retreat.

Late at night the witness went onto an elevated deck after hearing brush noise and animal sounds. Something heavy walked up a ground-level dock and stopped directly beneath the deck. The witness saw only a large dark shape through the boards while it made loud sniffing breaths, then fled back inside.

The witness was lying awake in a tent at a Rain Lake campsite with a companion already asleep when a powerful but silent ground thud was felt very close to the tent, followed by a brief skunk-like odor. Later that night the witness heard an unusually loud whoop-like sound first taken for a loon. In the morning an indistinct disturbance entering camp and a freshly snapped tree stump were found, and while hiking out the witness felt watched.
Possible sighting of animal playing peek-a-boo at Argyle Lake State Park
Two companions hiking back toward their car noticed the woods go silent and heard something moving in brush alongside them and crossing behind them, along with a musky skunk-like odor. Near the last bend the reporter glanced back and saw a wide, dark-brown figure squatting beside a low dead tree about 100 yards away. They kept walking, then ran to the car and drove off and rarely spoke of it afterward.
Night time foot race with an unseen animal near Woodinville
Late at night the witness walked home alone along a familiar wooded trail and heard something moving parallel in the brush, breathing heavily. When the witness stopped the sounds stopped, and when walking resumed the follower kept pace. The witness ran toward home and the follower pursued onto gravel and pavement on two feet while making low growls and calls and trying to cut the witness off. At the house the witness's dog confronted the unseen pursuer, which halted very close before withdrawing into the brush.
Possible night time encounter while fishing near Atwater
Two brothers were night-fishing from a secluded point when they broadcast loud predator calls for about 90 minutes and then sat quietly. The witness heard footsteps approaching through the woods and shone a high-powered spotlight toward the sound. A loud, deafening scream/roar erupted, terrifying both men, who then gathered gear and left with one covering their exit. They reported sensing movement about 20 to 30 yards away and hearing branches breaking in another direction but seeing no distinct shape.
