Various incidents near a possible nest on Vancouver Island
A group of seven hikers were hiking on a mountain trail in the afternoon. They heard cackling, yelping, growling and moaning sounds and found the trail blocked by a large uprooted stump with placed boulders and smashed trees. Two upright figures, one black and one light brown and hairy, were seen moving parallel to the group and leaping down a cliff, while the group felt stalked and watched as they hurried out to the road.

The witness drove to an abandoned homestead to take sunset photographs. While walking back to the truck through knee-deep snow he heard twigs snapping and footsteps running through thick woods alongside him. He ran to the truck, heard a deep elk-like grunt, and saw pines shaking with snow falling off as he left. He returned two weeks later and found snapped-off saplings.
Possible daylight sighting by hikers on the Stanley Glacier Trail (BC/Alberta border)
A group of six hiked down a mountain trail in the afternoon. A hair-covered biped crossed the trail between the lead hiker and the next person and leapt down an embankment into trees. The party glimpsed movement and heard crashing as a dog chased it, then watched a distant burnt tree sway with creaking before falling. Believing the creature pushed the tree over, the group left quickly.
