Two men checking trap lines on a quiet afternoon in early September 1998 encountered a hair-covered creature at about 100 feet. The creature watched them briefly before running uphill into the forest. The men described brown body hair, a low forehead, small dark eyes, huge hands, a bulky build and a foul odor, then removed their traps and did not return.

While on a solo night escape-and-evasion march at Fort Jackson, the witness stopped at a fire-lane crossing around 2 a.m. in total darkness. Something approached, moved away after being challenged, made growling talk-like sounds, then approached again before crashing away through brush. Startled, the witness ran and eventually reached another soldier with a fire and truck.
A Teenager and His Dog Encounter an Ape-like Creature While Retrieving Their Trap Lines
A teenager checking muskrat traps before school with a dog noticed the dog staying close and growling. On a steep bank the witness saw a tall hair-covered figure with a non-human face and a foul smell. The figure quickly walked and ran away across a field, stepping over a six-foot gate without touching it. The witness left without finding tracks because the ground was frozen and snow later covered the area.
