Four men returning home were accosted by a long-haired gorilla-like wild man and fought it to the ground, binding its wrists. It freed itself, climbed a tree with cat-like agility, then later came down and fought the two watchers, badly biting and scratching one and tearing clothing before disappearing.

A two-year-old playing with two other children disappeared when the companions briefly went to seek flowers and returned to find her gone. Over a hundred searchers and later torch parties scoured woods and fields without finding a trace. Newspaper follow-ups suggested she may have been carried away by a wild being recently seen in the locality.

In 1884 a rural community living around Ocheesee Pond lost livestock and heard eerie nighttime calls from the water. After children were frightened by a hair-covered figure, residents formed a posse, captured it, and transported it chained to the governor in Tallahassee. The governor could not place it and sent it to the nearby Chattahoochee hospital, where it died and was buried under later construction.

A party out driving with horses through a hill pass had a lead horse become unmanageable and show terror as a wild cry came from the thicket, refusing to pass. Local farmers also reported livestock depredations and peculiar footprints in snow that searchers could not resolve. The newspaper presented the story without conclusion.

A newspaper correspondent described a party tracking a famous wild man to a frozen lake where dogs lost the trail. A rider watched the figure break ice with its arms, come ashore and shake itself. When headed off, it dragged the hunter down, gouged his eyes and bit him, destroyed the saddle and bridle, then rode the horse toward the mountains using a sapling as a club.

After thefts of food and disappearances of women and children, tribal leaders sent mounted warriors to confront man-like beasts. The party rode for hours and charged a group seen from a hilltop amid a strong smell of decay and a mound of victims. Gunfire and hand fighting left the creatures and their captain dead, and survivors buried the dead.

Stories go back to the 1800s and include chasing people off horses, with a revival around the late 1960s.
