Possible vocalizations heard while motorists were taking a break at turnout near La Manga Pass
Four people stopped at a turnout on Highway 17 ascending toward La Manga Pass in the morning. After one person in the party gave a whoop, they heard three loud roar-like vocalizations with pauses between them. They saw no source and left quickly, later noting the sounds resembled an Ohio howl recording and acknowledging a human trick was possible.

The witness was scouting high-elevation timber for a later elk hunt when he noticed tree breaks, pushovers and tracks. From boulders he glassed about eight hairy bipeds with young, watching them for about half an hour as some appeared to hide at a choke point while others circled. He concluded they were hunting deer and left with his companion before dark.
