The next morning a previously intact rotten stump across the river was found split with half lying at the river's edge.

The witness and two companions were scouting for deer season by a creek near a cedar swamp when they heard an unfamiliar low growl. After the witness threw stones toward the sound, they saw a dark upright shadow moving at the swamp edge and rocks were thrown back toward them. No creature was reportedly seen clearly, and the interpretation as possible Sasquatch activity developed over later years.
