After noticing a large tree down across the trail, the group encountered a hair-covered primate-like creature that peered over the tree while rocks were thrown toward them. The witness and her husband were relaxing on the back porch of a mountain cabin in the evening when they heard prolonged loud howling from across the mountain to the southeast. The vocalizations lasted several minutes and did not match any wildlife known to them. Residents in a Campbell County community reported a large ape-like primate on the loose over several weeks in autumn 2003. One resident reported seeing the animal at close range, noting a strong odor, and said it threw a kitten toward them. Other reports described a home intrusion with scattered belongings, stool deposits on property, and many missing or dead cats and kittens. Animal control and the sheriff's department investigated and warned residents not to approach the animal.

Days later a partner taking garbage out saw a very tall ugly figure eye-to-eye from a deck. The guest heard heavy crunching footsteps in the gorge, shouted, fired a rifle into the air, and listened as it paused then jumped a high bank without breaking stride and moved away.

In August 1984 four teenagers were camping overnight on a wooded ridge when they heard unexplained noises and their dogs became agitated. A very loud yell came from just behind their lean-to, which shook visibly, causing the group to flee through the dark woods. One teen briefly froze before following, later reporting grunting and footsteps behind him. The next day the group found the lean-to torn down, the fire pit rocks scattered, and a strong wet-dog-like odor at the site.

Years later while working in law enforcement, the witness drove to a remote trailhead to pick up a fire-watcher ranger during a dry fall with active forest fires. Concerned when the ranger did not appear after dark, he walked up the trail with a flashlight and rifle and found the ranger hiding by a rock. Together they watched a tall, long-armed figure with large reflective eyes at the far edge of a clearing for an extended period before it crouched, raked grass, backed into the woods, and circled away crashing through brush. The ranger later said he had already encountered the same figure on the trail, where it screamed at him, caused him to drop his kit, and threw his bag, which was never recovered.

The witness, recently out of the military, was fly-fishing with three relatives in a steep, remote river gorge. He turned to see an upright animal at close range that quickly climbed the steep bank to the ridgeline. The group then heard extremely loud guttural vocalizations and huffs, saw movement on the ridge, and had a large rock land in the water near them. They left at dusk and later agreed among themselves it had not been a bear despite one relative's dismissive explanation.
