The witness stopped at a Highway 26 rest area late at night while driving toward the coast to let the dog out. From the southeast across the highway she heard a sustained eerie scream lasting several seconds at a distance. Despite familiarity with native wildlife sounds, she could not identify the sound.

A follow-up noted the rest stop surroundings as heavily forested and sparsely populated and noted the witness knew native wildlife sounds but could not identify this sound.
