Hunters hear vocalization near camp in Selway/Bitterroot Wilderness
Account
The witness got up before dawn while on an elk-hunting trip and stepped outside the tent while a relative remained inside. From the dark the witness heard a strange vocal sound that began like a howl, shifted to bugle-like notes, then to hoot-like notes. After the sound ended a bugle call was made to elicit a response but none came, and a later search at first light found no tracks. The witness noted the sound was unfamiliar and suggested it could have been an unknown bird.
