Before the ridge sighting the family had biscuits taken from an oven pan twice when no children were present, and whole hams disappearing from the smokehouse. One late night chickens made a ruckus and a small dog refused to go out. A flashlight search found wide chisel-like scratches on a sassafras tree starting above eight feet and running down to chest level.
