Unusual incident... a horseback rider's close encounter
Account
The witness was riding a horse on a wooded dirt road at dusk when the horse became agitated. After hearing rustling and a loud scream, the witness saw eyes and then a large upright creature that lunged out and seized the saddle. Face to face with the creature, the witness clung to the horse's neck as it bolted without looking back. The saddle was later described as torn with deep gouges.

The witness returned to the ranch the next morning to check the saddle and horse but learned the saddle was gone and riding work had ended.
An investigator estimated the creature's height at 8 feet based on the horse's height with the rider.
The witness listened to several vocalization recordings and identified the Del Norte County recording as closest to the scream heard.
