In summer 1970, the witness and a companion were camping in a tent along logging roads when they heard loud ape-like screaming lasting many seconds. They saw a large dark silhouette about 150 feet away, shouted warnings and fired .22 rounds at it without effect. Upon approaching, they found the silhouette was an old logging stump. The witness estimated the screams came from within a few hundred yards, with no nearby houses.

An investigator conducted a phone interview during which the witness provided details and offered GPS coordinates.
An investigator sent a Barred Owl recording for comparison and the witness said it was lower pitched than the screams heard.
