Possible growling at hikers near the San Gabriel Wilderness

About 15 years before reporting, the witness and a friend paused at a saddle near Smith Mountain while hiking. They heard a very low growl/snuffling sound from tall bushes nearby that they could not see through. Frightened, they left quickly without investigating, and the witness later wondered about the source after seeing nearby reports.

An investigator spoke with the witness by phone and had the witness mimic the sounds, assessing them as within bear repertoire while noting the witness felt the low pitch implied larger size.
